Honeymoon in My Hometown: San Diego!

I grew up in San Diego and absolutely love it. Even though I am currently living in Orange County, I am hoping that one day we will be able to return to San Diego. To be honest there are so many thoughts that come to mind for honeymoon in my hometown, it has taken me awhile to put everything together. San Diego is beautiful all year, so you can come and enjoy at any point. Obviously for those that love the beach, summer is the best for that. If you are planning on coming here for your honeymoon you could either play tourist and see all the sights or choose to cozy up in romantic restaurants, spas and relaxing scenery. San Diego is very big so I think I’m going to divide it up by general areas and things to do.

Downtown San Diego(also includes the Gaslamp district)

Source

In downtown San Diego, not far from the airport there is tons to do. The Gaslamp is the main part of downtown where everything is in walking distance but there are also other great finds nearby. Friday and Saturday nights are packed with people going out to dance, hang out at bars at eat at some of San Diego’s best restaurants.

Where to Stay (There are lots of options. I’ve listed a few that I have visited or heard good things about):
Hard Rock Hotel
Manchester Grand Hyatt
Ivy Hotel
The Sofia Hotel
The Keating

Places to Eat:

This list could seriously be endless so I will list some of my favorites, but I recommend you research ahead of time so you find that perfect place.
Island Prime/C-Level: An incredible view of downtown San Diego. You can either sit in the beautiful outdoor seating of the bar or the more formal indoor restaurant.
Aqua Al 2: I have a serious weakness for Italian food and pasta. This restaurant is only here and in Florence, Italy.
Blue Pointe Cafe: I’ve had many special dinners at this restaurant and always walk out stuffed. This place and Island Prime/C-Level are all a part of Cohn Restaurants. They are all San Diego based restaurants that have excellent food.
Little Italy: This is literally a street that is all Italian food restaurants and stops. Basically it is heaven as I am a serious pasta lover. There is everything from super casual to fancy. I say just go walk the street and pick what looks good.

Things to Do:

Petco Park: Well I’m not sure how our baseball team will be this year, but the park they play in is awesome! It’s located right in downtown by the Gaslamp so you can go to the game and walk to the bars and restaurants after.
Old Town San Diego: A fun place to walk around and see more of the historic San Diego. Make sure you stop at one of the delicous Mexican food restaurants.
Mission Bay: Another popular spot during the summers for picnics, volleyball and jet skiiing. If you are a walker, runner or biker there is a great sidewalk that circles the whole bay. Get there early though to reserve your space because it gets crowded.
Balboa Park: I love spending time in Balboa Park. There are tons of museums, gardens and performances to see. The architecture are surroundings are beautiful. If you explore the museums and parks all day, try to see a show at Starlight Theatre at night. It’s an outdoor theatre that usually has some fun musical during the summer.

La Jolla and Del Mar

Some of the beach towns in San Diego, these areas have great places to eat, stay, shop and of course just relax on the beach. Mr. Ducky and I got engaged down on the cliffs in Del Mar! La Jolla is just south of Del Mar and I mention the two in the same category because they have a similar feel. La Jolla has a little bit more to do in it’s actual area thats walking distance, but I grew up in Del Mar.

Del Mar-source

Where to Stay:
La Valencia: A beautiful and historic hotel down in the middle of La Jolla. It’s the perfect place to stay and be in walking distance of restaurants, shopping and the beach.
L’Auberge Del Mar: Growing up in the area this was one of my favorite hotels and it was just redone a year ago. Right in the heart of Del Mar above the beach, it’s the perfect spot for relaxation.
The Lodge at Torrey Pines: If you are a golfer you would probably love staying at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. The Lodge is just gorgeous and sits on Torrey Pines Golf Course.

La Valencia-source

Where to Eat:
Manhattan: This elegant restaurant is hidden away at the bottom floor of the Empress Hotel in La Jolla, but it’s one of my family’s favorite spots. The steaks and lamb chops are to die for. It’s kind of a romantic setting with live jazz on certain nights.
Jake’s Del Mar: Is a super yummy steak/seafood place and is located right on the beach in Del Mar. There is obviously a gorgeous view as you enjoy your meal.
Pacific Del Mar: Another seafood restaurant with an amazing view. It’s located in Del Mar Plaza that has lots of cute shops and several great restaurants. I mention it specifically because they make my favorite creme brulee ever!
Board and Brew: Is a block up from the beach and is the perfect spot to grab a delicious sandwich. I recommend the Chicken Club.

What to do:

Beach Beach and Beach! There are lots of beaches but the most popular in these areas are La Jolla Shores and 15th Street/Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. Of course there are all the activities going along with the beach which include surfing, kayaking, body boarding and building sand castles.
Racetrack: During the later part of summer and beginning of Septemeber you can go see the horse races where the “surf meets the turf.” This is always a fun outing and something a little different. Opening day everyone wears crazy hats and then heads to Del Mar Plaza area and you never know what you will see.
Del Mar Fair (now refered to as San Diego Fair): This happens from June to usually about July 4th and is popular for the area. Keep in mind that if you are visiting during this time you will encounter traffic in this area even if you are passing through. Check out the listing of concerts, a lot of times you can see some great shows depending on the year.

Coronado

This is a beautiful area and you just take a big bridge over from San Diego. I love all the little houses and cottages. The famous Del Coronado Hotel is year and is just a fun area to spend some time. We always went to Coronodo on the 4th of July to watch the huge fireworks display.

If you can stay at the historic Del Coronado Hotel. For another alternative you can look at Loews Coronado Bay, which is another favorite spot in the area. For eating in the area you can bring a picnic for the beach or splurge on one of the restaurants at the Del Coronado Hotel. There are several options for eating at the Del itself. All are either in a luxurious setting like the Crown Room or overlooking the beach. If you walk around the town, there are plenty of casual options as well.

More things to do/see in San Diego:

Pacific Beach: If you are looking for more of a night scene head down to Pacific Beach. There are lots of fun bars, restaurants and a huge beach that is very crowded during the summers.
The San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park: I’d probably be a terrible San Diegan if I didn’t mention these places. They really are amazing to see. The zoo has more to see, but the Wild Animal Park focuses on endangered animals in their natural habitats. Both are worth visiting, but I’ll give you the warning that the Wild Animal Park is really hot during the summers.
Wine Tasting in Temecula: There are lots of wine tasting tours you can take in Temecula. I personally love the South Coast Winery. It’s a beautiful spot with a great restaurant, spa and cute little villas you can stay in.
SeaWorld: You know what it is, so I won’t explain. I haven’t been recently but I know they’ve added lots of attractions.

Temecula Vineyard-source

Any trip to San Diego is not complete without multiple stops to eat delicious Mexican food! Here are a few different restaurants that are all delicious!

Old Town Mexican Cafe: Everything here is good and it’s a favorite spot in San Diego that has been around forever. Watch them make homemade tortillas in the window.
El Indio: One of my favorite spots downtown and it’s inexpensive! The tamales are delicious!!
Fidels: Hidden from main traffic, Fidels is a favorite spots for locals after a day at the races. It’s in a converted old house and has all sorts of charm.

Other References in Planning Your Trip:

Beach Guide: Browse this website to find a description of different San Diego beaches to plan your day.
Sign-On San Diego: A great source for reviews of restaurants and listings of current things going on in the area.

I could probably go on and on forever about different fabulous restaurants or things to do in San Diego, but I don’t want to overwhelm with any more information. If you have questions please feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer along with other readers who I know are from San Diego.

I’m Joyful Because…

…Courtney from Joyful Weddings & Events is my month-of-coordinator!!

When I was looking for a day of coordinator I did lots of research to find vendors in my area. I emailed a lot of different people and met a few and talked with people I liked, but no one that I was really excited about or they were so far out of my budget there was no chance. (If you are an OC/SD person and want to hear more details about those vendors shoot me a message and I’d be happy to go into more detail)

Then I got an email from Courtney and she invited me to meet her at a bridal show she was doing in San Diego. I met her really briefly there and unfortunately couldn’t stay long, but based on her and her awesome booth I decided I wanted to meet with her again.

A great thing about Courtney is that she does weddings in both Orange County and San Diego, so I was able to meet her for coffee in Orange County after class one night. As we chatted back a forth at the local Starbucks I felt like I found a new friend! She seemed to just understand me and get what we wanted for the wedding. I loved hearing about her life, family and wonderful business. Our time flew by and at the end of it I felt like I had just found a new friend and most importantly someone I wanted on the team!

She knew all the wedding blogs that I mentioned and the different ideas that I had gotten from them. This was great, because I have gotten so much inspiration for wedding blogs etc. and some of the other coordinators I had met with had no idea what I was talking about. Another huge thing? She has a cricut!?! Yes I know, I’m a huge nerd. But I was so excited to find someone who actually knew what the cricut was and someone who could give me more ideas on how to use it for the wedding.

If you check out Courtney’s blog, you will see her amazing creativity and DIY projects for her own events. She has an awesome style that is fun, chic, whimsical and beautiful. Being a bride that plans on doing DIY projects, it was important that I find someone who also valued those details and believes in how they can make the wedding that much more special and meaningful. After meeting Courtney and connecting with her, I knew that I would be able to trust her with taking care of all my final details and that she would be able to handle of any crisis that happens that day. I felt like I could learn a lot from Courtney and that our wedding would be that much more special and memorable with her being a part of it.

Now for some eye candy from her wonderful weddings…

While I love wedding planning and wouldn’t give it up for the world, I know that if I had to choose someone to plan the whole wedding from start to finish, I would choose Courtney. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Courtney through this whole process and am thankful in advance that she will be putting up with me!

Aren’t you amazed by her work? If you haven’t yet check out her website and blog! Also, she just had one of her weddings featured in the latest Ceremonies magazine and on the WedddingbeePRO!

Now I know there are several of you that are wondering whether or not you need a day of/month of coordinator and if one is worth the cost. I want to give my thought behind that topic so I’ll try to share some of my thoughts in an upcoming post.

Making Our Team

The fact that I just put a sports picture on my wedding blog is pretty ironic considering I wouldn’t normally be a big sports fanatic. I watch games every once in awhile with my family or Mr. Ducky and can enjoy them. However, usually I’m doing something on my computer or eating some unhealthy snack that is out in honor of the game. I’m making an exception and posting a picture because: A) I’m from San Diego so “Go Chargers!” and B) I’m going to tell you a bit about my philosophy of picking my team for the wedding…

(To balance the sports photo and all the text I’ll just post some pretty pictures throughout as you read my rambles)

When I first began to think about who I wanted to work with for my wedding when it came to vendors, location etc. I thought about it as if I were picking my team. I’m not just picking people to work for me or paying for a simple service. I’m searching for a group of people that I want to work with during this crazy and stressful process that will be surrounding me on the day of my wedding. I’m searching for my team.

We all know how hard it is to pick out that guest list and choose the people who mean the most in your life that will add to the specialness your day. You will be paying a lot so that they can be there. I think it is just as important that vendors you work with will also add to your day. Your catering manager, coordinator, photographer, DJ and florist will all be working with you closely and who they are and their work will impact your wedding and you personally whether for good or bad.

I wanted to find people that would be on my team. Did I want them to be awesome and super talented at what they do? Absolutely! However, beyond that I wanted to find people that I felt like I could connect with and if I had just randomly met them outside of the wedding process we would probably be friends. You have to trust these people and be able to let go of the control you have held so tightly onto in the months of planning. I personally feel better handing all my details, photography etc. to someone that I trust and like. These people should add to your day and you need to be comfortable around them. Your bridal party is part of your team that you can lean on from support and trust; your vendors are another extension of that team.

I couldn’t be more excited about the people that are on the team so far! Each person is insanely talented and just an awesome person that I am enjoying getting to know.

I’ve told you that our wedding will be at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Well the catering manager, Tricia is one of the big reasons that we are there. From the time I met her I could tell she was on top of things and nothing was going to get out of control on that day with her in charge. She was really friendly and during our deciding process she was more than helpful helping me figure out budget. Also, she helped us secure the Aragon Lawn as our ceremony site when originally we weren’t going to be allowed to guarantee that particular spot.

Next week I’ll tell you about my AMAZING photographer and my INCREDIBLE month-of coordinator and why I think they are so wonderful!

Sneak peak of their insane talent…

Just looking at their pictures makes me more excited for having them on my team!

The Search: Part II

If you are just catching up go this Part I to hear about the first store I went to for wedding dresses. The next store we went to just opened up in North County San Diego a few months ago.

The shop is called Bliss Bride. The two owners, Jennifer and Anne are so sweet and I had a lot of fun working with them. I really felt special and they close down the whole store just for you. If you are a San Diego bride and looking for a smaller shop then this one is wonderful. Their dresses are higher end ranging from $2000-12,000 with the majority being between $3000-5000.

Once again: MR. DUCKY DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!

The Search Has Begun…Part I

The search for my wedding dress had officially begun. Mama Duck and I went to two different bridal dress stores. You may remember my first post and then follow-up post regarding my feelings for wedding dress shopping. I’m pleased to say that I actually had a good time and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

There are a few things that began to stand out as I tried on dresses. I really liked dresses that had rouching in the bodice. To my surprise a dropped waist looked good on me. My fear was that I was not going to be tall enough. However, the height was not an issue and the dropped waist showed off a bit more of my figure.

Our first store was Here Comes The Bride in San Diego. It is one of the more popular stores down there. There is a big room that has lots of dresses and then a hall with several “bridal suites.” The bridal suite is where you try on the dresses and has a comfy couch, big mirror, pedestal and a little cabinet with water, binder clips and other things I don’t know about.

Basically I just took a deep breath and went for it. I learned the “duck and dive” move it get into the dresses. Thanks to some advice from a fellow blogger, I wore a strapless bra and some bikini panties so that my butt was not exposed for all to see. I’d say that the experience was not necessarily emotional, but kind of a “woah moment” when you realize you really have a wedding dress on.

Okay my loyal readers, I did take pictures or I guess Mama Duck did. However, she was sitting down taking some of them and then tends to just hit the button at random times. The result being that these pictures are NOT flattering. I will show them to you as long as you promise not to laugh at how scary I look. If you have never seen a picture of me before, I apologize in advance and encourage you to keep checking back for when my posts don’t contain terrible pictures of myself. I am trying to be brave and be a devoted blogger and show you the good, bad and ugly. Here we go…

NOTE: MR. DUCKY IF YOU ARE RANDOMLY LOOKING AT THIS BLOG DO NOT LOOK ANY FURTHER. I MEAN IT! YOU WILL BE SORRY…

Dress Shopping…dun dun DUN!

Remember when I told you about my anxiety to go shopping and find“the dress”? In preparation of my first bridal dress appointment I checked out all the designers that were going to be at the store. I was excited, but a little nervous at the same time. I still didn’t like the idea of being on a pedestal with a bunch of people looking at me. I was going with mama duck and my goal was just to really get an idea of what I liked and what looked good on me.

I know we’ve looked at dresses before, but here are an example of some of the designers were at the first store we went to. Are you familiar with any of them?

Michelle Roth Couture

Henry Roth

Alvina Valenta

Tara Keely

ProNovias

Lazaro

Jim Helm

Rivini

Renella De Fina Couture

Have you heard of these designers? Or was your dress made by one of them? Any tips for shopping?

The briefing on this first trip will be coming soon…

Getting linked to new design inspiration!

I am quickly finding that it is so fun to meet people via the blogging world. It’s like you get to know little snippets here and there and be inspired at the same time. My newest discovery came from a comment that someone left me not too long ago. I had commented on a Weddingbee post about a San Diego photographer and Sarah linked to my website after she saw I was from San Diego to give me some helpful tips! I was able to find her website and was so excited to see her awesome blog.

Sarah runs a design studio in Southern California called Fuzzynk. She has an awesome blog that shares ideas, her designs and other helpful tips. What I really love is that she posts inspiration boards to go with her stationary and paper. Amazing! So I wanted to share some of my favorite things on her site.

I love the personality that comes from using this color combo in weddings.  I stop to look each time I see a wedding with these colors.  They are unexpected, but so fun.

This board was designed from the paper on the upper left-hand corner.  Each detail on this board goes so well together!

I love the sweet design on these pieces.  I hope that I can also create a theme that is carried out from the save the dates to the invitations to the favors.

Look at all these little design “samples,”  I wish I could see the whole collections.  I love how all the elements pull together for a unified look.

Look how elegant these invitations are…

Another beautiful inspiration board…I love the soft pinks and florals.

And last but not least a wonderful inspiration board a beautiful cakes….yum!

You can really tell that she has a great eye for design by what she puts together for color combos, fonts and images. Make sure you go take a look for some great ideas and creativity. Thanks Sarah for letting me share some of your pictures!

Vendor Blogs:
I just created a new page with a list of Vendor blogs. It is just the beginning, but please leave comments with your favorite blogs to check. I’m hoping to get a much bigger list in the next few days.

Our Perfect Wedding Location and Venue

Are you ready to see what we finally decided on?!? From where we last left off I believe that we had just discovered that we would not be getting married at the Estancia La Jolla to our disappointment… I was feeling pretty frustrated and could suddenly understand why people elope. It was to avoid all this planning craziness and stress. But in spite of all the craziness from our venue hunt there was an upside!

After seeing so many places (Refer to Part I, Part II and Part III for the details) we knew more of what wanted. We wanted a unique location that had a sort of rustic charm, an outdoor ceremony, an indoor reception, not too many onlookers around, an efficient coordinator, local accommodations and nothing that our guests would feel crammed into. To meet the criteria and stay within our budget, I decided that we needed to move further inland or further south. Because of the concern that driving south would be to far for some of our guests (adding an additional 1/2 hour to a several hour drive) we decided to try searching inland. Sure enough I found that pricing was much more reasonable.

Once place stood out in particular and that was the Rancho Bernardo Inn, it seemed beautiful in the pictures and affordable from the packages that I had been sent. I was in San Diego by myself visiting my family for the weekend when I first spoke to the catering manager. She said that if I wanted I could come that day and she would show me around in person before she left. I jumped into the car with parents and fell in love with the location.

The Rancho Bernardo Inn has this rustic Tuscan feel from when you arrive on the property. The property is huge, but each area feels private. While it is a resort it doesn’t feel like a touristy destination spot. It has it’s own charm while being a major resort. There is a beautiful golf course, luxury spa and some amazing restaurants. My parents and I ate dinner there the first time we visited and it was amazing! I have no fear that my guests will have a wonderful dinner at our wedding. But I will stop all my rambling and share with you the pictures…

Disclaimer/Side note: These pictures do not do the place justice, especially since they don’t show the venue set up for an event. Use your imagination and think of all the possibility that is there…Most of the pictures I took personally unless noted otherwise

I love how lantern hang in the trees and there are all these special spots and benches to enjoy your surroundings.

How great does this pool look? It makes me want to go for a swim!

Our ceremony site is on the Aragon Lawn. I’m so excited for this because at first we didn’t know if we could actually have this particular site** (see at the end for the full story). Here is the ceremony location from afar…

Here is a closeup version. The black trellace has vines and those lantern I love hanging from it. Each side is surrounded by white rose bushes and park benches. The pictures really don’t do it justice.

The cocktail hour will take place on the terrace outside the reception ballroom. The terrace is a shaded area that overlooks the golf course. There are french doors that open from the ballroom. These aren’t the best pictures, but you can get an idea.

Outside our ballroom we have our own private bar area that will be a part of the cocktail hour and somewhere to gather that is inside. Isn’t it cute?

Hung C Tran Blog

From the bar area is the entrance to the Bernardo Ballroom, where our reception will be held. The ballroom has high ceilings with wood beams, wrought iron chandeliers and french doors that open up onto the terrace where the cocktail hours was. It has that simple, rustic and can be molded into our vision for the day.

Photo from San Diego Style Weddings

Photo from Here Comes the Guide

Well that’s all the pictures I have for now. I will try looking for more pictures of actual weddings that have taken place there so you can get a better idea of what everything looks like.

I called Mark from the location describing each detail and the feel I had from being there. He was excited and told me he was supportive of whatever I decided. After deciding this was “the one” we worked with the manager to negotiate the specifics including the Aragon lawn and other details. Before signing the contract Mark and I went to the Rancho Bernardo Inn together so that he could see it in person. He loved it as well (other than the fact than I had coffee spilled all over him from our drive over, so he was very uncomfortable) and we signed turned the contract in before we left the hotel.

So what did I learn?

  • That I needed to be willing to compromise. No, I was not getting the coastal location I had originally envisioned, but many of the places I had looked at were coastal regions with no views anyway. I do not have an unlimited budget and I needed to be reasonable.
  • Patience, persistence and honesty pays off. During our search I felt so frustrated and at certain times wondered if it would ever work out. However, we did eventually find the location we wanted and were able to make the guarantees (the Aragon lawn) that were important.
  • The most important thing is that at the end of the day Mr. Ducky and I will be married and I get to spend the rest of my life with the most amazing man in the world. This sounds so cheesy, but it’s an important thing to remember when I get stressed or disappointed during the wedding planning part.

Have you learned any important lessons along the way of wedding planning? When has your patience paid off?

**The Aragon lawn was actually not supposed to be guaranteed for our ceremony site. The lawn is attached to the fancy Aragon conference center. I would only be able to use the lawn if the conference center was not in use the day of the wedding and that would not be confirmed until weeks before. They could not guarantee the lawn and I’d have to reserve one of the other ceremony sites. I liked the other ceremony sites, but did not love them like I did the Aragon lawn. Well long story short I was honest with my catering manager about my feelings and budget (I could not afford to rent out the conference center for the wedding) and she totally worked with me. I had to be flexible on my date, but it worked out. So be patient and persistent for what is really important to you.
